I’ve used a line from an amusing little song to bring focus to the 13 days or steps found in the smaller of the two wheels in the Mayan Tzolkin Calendar. The question is asked, “Is there a meaning behind those 13 numbers?”.
Over the years many have offered definition to those numbers. We have the 13 days within the Mayan Tzolkin, and we have the 10 number is numerology. There are pairings such as 11, 22, 33 and so forth. There are the hours within a day and the more subtle hours of the night. Somehow we have managed to accept a day/night cycle with two twelve hour segments.
What purpose do the numbers serve? Numbers serve as a form of measure, and in this human form we have spent many a day calculating and measuring. We have a need to interpret, to break life down into small chewable pieces so we can digest it.
Much could be said for every step we take, but is the value in any one step or in the cumulative picture? Must the story wait until the final step, or does the subtle messages in each moment in themselves hold merit?
One question that may or may not have answer is, “why does the wheel contain 13 numbers”? In the Mayan Tzolkin Calendar there is a 260 day cycle that is comprised of 13 cycles of 20, or 20 cycles of 13. The significance of 260 days has been compared to the gestation cycle of a fetus, with approximately 9 months in the cycle from conception to birth. Can we take this idea and compare our life beyond birth in any way to the time prior? I find this concept to be intriguing.
Why 13 number days? In the Mayan Daily Insights I offer bits and pieces that are presented to me, and when I add it all together I find an image of the tail of the comet. There is no true beginning, nor is there a definitive ending. In the moon landing, tell me exactly where the planting of the flag on the surface of the moon began. Did it ever end? Could we be holding onto that flag right now through our focus on its existence?
The Mayan Tzolkin calendar shows us two wheels turning together, with the inner 13 number wheel clicking one day at a time with the outer 20 face wheel. We have the linear movement of number as well as face. Yes, we do have our “straight and narrow” perception of time, with few examples of anyone or anything stepping outside its boundaries. But when these two wheels meet we have unique combinations, giving each meeting a new light. Here we have great opportunity for a new light, a fresh view of an old story, and a chance to step in a new direction. In the Mayan Tzolkin calendar we have many cycles happening simultaneously. We are also offered the chance to bring together what we know, live, and dream, those fragments we know as past, present and future. Every moment of every day we live in the circle of life, a bold example that we do not live solely in a line going from point A to point B.
The wheel of the bus does go round and round, all over town.
