Mayan Daily Insights: How We Learn About Ourselves, One Day At A Time

As I prepared to write today’s Mayan Daily Insight, early in the morning, my first impression was how much I needed to clear my head.  It is easy to be distracted, not just by the world around us but also by our own thoughts.

Today is December 27, 2009, and 6 Oc, the Dog in the Mayan Tzolkin calendar.  It was believed that the day a person was born indicated a trait that they carried, and those born on any day carrying the sign of Oc would be instilled with loyalty.  We can take this a step further by saying this act of loyalty requires some form of relationship as well.

Today I began my quest for a six-Oc insight by focusing on distractions. When we allow ourselves to be swept away by any of the billions of gusts that come along it is difficult to remain focused.  We could carry this further by saying that a little task can become overwhelming, not under its own power but the power of the obstacles we place along the way.

If we return to Oc, the dog, and the number six that accompanies it, we can see that the world will never change, but we can.  The world is not here to bend only for our needs: that would be too easy.  In fact, it would be a disservice if everything came to us pre-packaged and complete.  We are here to exercise our abilities, and the quality of Oc is no exception.

Oc is about loyalty, and today I see loyalty as a precursor to commitment.  With so many distractions around us our life can appear complicated, but is it?  The choice is ours: blessing and curse.  The choice is always ours.
