High Road, Low Road Gets Us Where?

There’s a song that was published in 1841 that is believed to be the horrid story of loss of life.  “O you’ll tak’ the high road and I’ll tak’ the low road And I’ll be in Scotland afore ye”.  I carry this saying into the post not for its original meaning, but for the slang we have created from it:  Life is filled with choices and options, most within our control with some imposed upon us.

In slang we refer to taking the high road in a righteous sense, that it is more noble and of our higher nature.  The low road, let’s talk taking the easy way out.  We may have many high and low roads in our life.  There is the reactive reptilian brain, and the reasoning cortex.  We have the path of spirit, and the lower body levels. There are many other examples of directions we can face.

January 18, 2010 is 2 Eb, the Road in the Mayan Tzolkin calendar. As we travel along the road of life we carry with us markers: the flags, cones and road signs we use to assign value to the steps we take.  Taking the “high road” may doesn’t necessarily mean taking the hardest course; perhaps a better way to describe it is the narrow road, and we know the narrow road has been used many times before to describe our path in life.

I think today is a good day to bring awareness to our ability to have awareness, that we have a lifetime of opportunity to make many, many choices.  Roads are typically two-way, meaning we may have to backtrack occasionally to get back on track, but isn’t that what life is all about?
