Amazing things come in the night, and tonight will be no exception. This is the night of the Wolf Moon, or Tala Moon. In native culture the wolf is considered to be a teacher, invoking within us the quality of wisdom, honor, and loyalty.
Today is January 29, 2010, and it is 13 Akbal, the Night in the Mayan Tzolkin Calendar. There are many parallels found in this day, or night for the visual effects. The full moon gives us the greatest visions in the darkest times. Yet this moon cycle is not at all new. The cycle began two weeks prior, building to this moment. This 13 day Mayan cycle began nearly two weeks ago, and today reaches its turning point, the day of transition.
The wolf has strong ties to the moon. We can only speculate on the reason why the wolf howls at the moon. What does the moon give us, after all? The moon gives us nothing of its own creation, only the reflection cast upon its surface by something currently out of our reach.
When we turn to the Mayan symbol presented on this day we can draw a few connections between Akbal, the Night, and the moon. Akbal is that awakening to our own existence, the moment when we perceive and wonder. It is not often that we stand face to face with the brilliance that nourishes us, instead we catch a glimmer, a reflection, and then the journey begins.
On this magical 13th day, with the Wolf moon above us, perhaps we might find time to stand in the soft reflective light, and awaken in a whole new light.
