How Much Value is in a Pause?

Today is the first day of a new 13 day cycle, and what better place to start.  This day, Friday February 12, 2010 is 1 Caban, Earth in the Mayan Tzolkin calendar.  This is a wonderful reminder that we can pause.  How often do we think about how wonderful it is, just to be able to pause?  Of course we don’t think about it, the mind works far too quickly to be able to appreciate something so simple.

We’re here for the experience, and its so ironic that we pull our feet off the ground and into our fast vehicles, disconnect our focus from the moment and step into our fast thought processes.  What happened to the simple pleasure, the ability to stand still for a moment and breath in, feel the earth beneath our feet. We could even go so far as to recognize that its moss, or grass that we stand on, and how soft the earth is beneath the trees.

Typically when it is the first day of in the 13 day count I look forward at the days to follow to see the flow of those days, the midpoint and the 13th day, seeing the wave of the days to follow.  I pulled myself from my writing to calculate each of those days.  As I was doing so I realized how much I was pushing myself back into that process of giving more credence to the future and losing the tastes, and smells, and feelings that come with being in the moment.  So I give up, how many heartbeats would have gone by without my conscious participation.

Today contains my own walk in the woods, listening to the frantic journey of the water in the creek, seeing the textures of my surroundings, breathing, and being right here and now.  When exactly that will be I’m not sure, but I’ll know it when I get there.
