How do we gauge the meaning of anything in our lives? How do we measure the importance of that person we just met, or the value of a new direction? There could be any of a number of indicators pointing us one way or the other.
This day is Thursday, February 4, 2010 and 6 Muluc, the Water in the Mayan Tzolkin calendar. The number six to me can be a difficult one, a pivotal place nearly midpoint in the 13 day number system, a time we could consider restful for the body, but not for the spirit. Muluc doesn’t make this day any easier, given the depth that the water could potentially take.
We could take a different approach and focus just on this moment, the quality of our interactions and the satisfaction of knowing we gave as honestly as we could. By this I do not mean pouring out our soul to a complete stranger, or putting everything else aside. It means an alliance between words and actions, following our hello with even the briefest moment of attentiveness and recognition. The quality of what we give far outweighs the duration.
Here we stand, comparing the qualities of Muluc the water with the value we give any moment of any day. Can we really build a bridge between those two values? Certainly, after all life is relational. The water is what is, consistent enough to be called water, but flexible enough for us to use it in any of a number of ways.
