One of the interesting aspects of the Mayan calendar is its journey through both the physical and the spiritual world. We think that it is the physical world that is given to us a spoonful at a time, breaking time into minutes and seconds, breaths and steps. The spiritual side, while often referred to for its infinite possibilities, has its own measure.
Today we have the combination of 1 Manik, the Deer, in the Mayan calendar. While this might be a day “one” the glyph of Manik is not the first. We’ve already had several glyphs of a spiritual nature, with Ik, Akbal, and Cimi, but those have all been very personal in their nature. Today’s glyph, Manik, the Deer, is more like opening the windows to that infinite perspective we talked about earlier.
In this instance Manik shows this window in silence. This approach gives no spotlight to one way or another. It also sets no boundaries, and limits don’t even enter the scene. This opens up a whole new dimension beyond our, “If you see it, touch it, it already exists” world.
Opening our eyes to the infinite, where no one direction outweighs another, where any combination is possible. We’re so integrated into the ways of our physical world that we don’t often focus on what could be, and quite frankly we have a pretty full plate just with what is in our hands today. It’s funny, Manik is also referred to as “Hand”, and with that in mind we could see this window as more of a passageway, bringing an instance of the infinite within our reach.
