You know, it’s funny what memories surface when we take that step from having an idea to unfolding it into words. It’s like opening a present: the real gift is really on the inside, but we get so excited with the unwrapping part of it.
Today as we turn the two wheels of the Mayan calendar we reach the combination of 5 Edznab, the glyph or symbol that means Flint. The flint can easily give us that little spark that ignites into a blazing fire, or a brilliant idea. The flint is also like the wrapping on the outside of the present. We don’t look at the wrapping as a delay or barrier to what is inside, it is a sign that what is inside is a gift. So today we have a sign telling us about a sign.
That funny little memory I spoke of earlier was those little candies, maybe Japanese, that have a little bit of edible sweet rice paper wrapped around them. When I ate my first I was surprised that the paper melted in my mouth, giving me a treat before what I thought was the real treat inside. It was a wrapping paper kind of moment for me.
So how does all this relate to the Mayan calendar combination of the number five and the symbol of Edznab, the Flint? Our life experiences, that vast collection of moments we live within, those are the wrapping paper of life. The real gift is on the inside. So today a thought to ponder: If we loosen up that wrapping paper, and if you like you can see it also as the walls we talked about yesterday, what will we find? The real gift is on the inside!
