Everyone loves a celebration, its a wonder we don’t do more of it. Do we need reason to celebrate? Is it something that must be earned, or a rare occasion? How much truth is there in the belief that enjoying something often takes the special out of it, making it more routine and less appreciated.
Today we bring together the number 13 with the glyph of Chicchan, the monkey. A combination such as this speaks so strongly of celebration, deliberate and focused celebration. Here’s why:
The symbol of Chicchan is associated with that child-like quality: that playful, mischievous spirit. The “Monkey” aspect of it speaks of the illusion aspect, how easy it can be to get caught up in the moment, to buy into the stories. This time we will not view the “child” from such a superior place, but will see through the eyes of the wisest child, in the voice of 13 Chicchan.
We are so draw to the almost fantasy level of Chicchan, the Monkey, but as adults we know that we cannot afford to get too caught up in play. Chicchan counters our belief with this: “How could you be so afraid, don’t you know that true celebration is not a trap of illusion, it is bringing celebration into every moment of your life.”
Today as I awakened and my thoughts came into focus my first lucid thought centered around my own celebration of my birthday. Many other thoughts were there as well, postponing parts of the celebration and the work that took precedence on this day, but luckily my own spirit of Chicchan held true. To awaken in celebration, what a way to start the day. To live and breath in celebration, what a way to spend a lifetime. We can so easily choose where to draw the line, do we focus on the many hardships and rules, or the many precious things that together color the tapestry of our life? Today is day for celebrating more than just one part of us.
