Today is the day of 12 Oc, the Dog. I always enjoy writing about the 12th day, enjoying the characteristics that come out in the stories depending on who’s voice is heard. It’s like reaching the pinnacle of a long climb, or the moral of the story. Surprisingly enough yesterday we heard about the 12th day qualities from the voice of Muluc, the water, and I see it as a preparation for what comes today.
What is the message for today? The first images I have are ones that diminish the dog. Who else would wait, most often selflessly and silently, so often in servitude of another? Just moments ago my own dog came into the room, curling up in the space between me and the door, waiting without asking. I can hear the voices of narrow-minded people, saying, “Look at that stupid dog”. Yet those people are the ones who have no comprehension of commitment, or holding on to what you believe in.
Every dog I have ever known has had a world of enjoyment, and I would not make it any other way. They are not always “in your face” with their attention, but given circumstances of question, a situation that may escalate into danger, and they will be alert and focused. The dog is an amazing symbol of commitment.
What does all this have to do with the number 12? This number is a magical one in the Mayan perspective. To me it is the highest level, and it is also the seed for our next spiritual step, our next beginning being formed right before our very eyes. Take care of yourself on the thirteenth day, give honor to who you are and what you have, and keep within your heart whatever it is you value. That is the message of Oc, the Dog. Be there for those you love, be there for who you are, be there to uphold that which you believe in.
